Charles Callis
Hey Scott, I have revised my artist statement I was wondering if you could update it in the site. Hope all is well. I am an oil painter rooted in the rugged beauty of the Utah desert, where the vastness of the land and the ever-changing light fuel my creative vision. My work is an ongoing dialogue with the natural world, capturing the shifting moods of the landscape, from its quiet solitude to its untamed grandeur. While landscapes are my primary focus, I also explore figurative work and still life, drawn to the interplay of light, form, and atmosphere. My paintings are not merely depictions of place but reflections of memory, imagination, and the deep connection between the land and the people who inhabit it. The desert is both timeless and personal, shaped by the histories, stories, and lives that unfold within it. I strive to evoke a sense of familiarity—landscapes that feel both real and dreamlike, places that exist in both the physical world and in the mind’s eye. Through oil paint’s richness and versatility, I seek to capture more than just the appearance of a scene. I am drawn to the way nature shapes those who live within it—the way vast horizons, quiet canyons, and shifting light imprint themselves on the human spirit. My paintings are meditations on space, solitude, and time, infused with the echoes of experience and the interconnectedness of people and place. At its core, my work is about connection—to the land, to its history, and to the shared human experience of finding meaning, memory, and belonging within the landscape.
