Jeremy Russell

Jeremy Russell is a contemporary abstract expressionist and abstract landscape painter. He has made his home in Asheville, North Carolina, for the past 23 years. Jeremy attended the University of Asheville, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a minor in art history. While his education is traditional, his background in commercial art is less conventional but fundamental to his approach and style. Jeremy has a varied experience in film production, television scenic painting, and faux finishes, and he has owned a successful mural company for several years. Throughout his diverse career, he has maintained a dedication to fine art painting.

Abstract Landscapes. As opposed to painting landscapes as if viewers are looking at a scene, Jeremy paints so that viewers feel they are in a scene. His abstract paintings inform his landscapes. Originally a purist in contemporary abstract expressionism, Jeremy’s work has evolved into a novel approach to landscape paintings drawing on his appreciation of classical landscape painting and his intuitive connection to the natural world. Jeremy challenges himself “to recreate the experience of standing in a stream or holding a trout rather than painting an image of the place; I seek to paint the moment.” He appreciates and paints South Carolina Lowcountry, the Western United States, and scenes of Western North Carolina: rivers, waterfalls, vegetation, and rock formations. His goal is to capture the living moment of an area; the way the light moves, how the wind blows through trees, and the water rushes downstream, bouncing over and colliding with rocks. His abstract landscape paintings convey the sacred act of connecting with the natural world.
